The Khewra salt mine near Pind Dadan Khan in the Salt Range
region of Punjab, Pakistan, is actually 'Wonder of the World’. The Salt Range
originated 800 million years ago, when an area of 300 km under sea water
evaporated, followed by a geological stir. The crab is 100 miles south of
Islamabad and is easily accessible by the M2 motorway at the Leela Interchange.
Khewra Salt Mines is the world's second largest salt mine,
Pakistan's largest mine and the worlds oldest salt mine. The mine is famous for
the production of the famous Pink Himalayan salt and is a major tourist
attraction around 250,000 visitors a year. The Khewra Salt Mine is a
magnificent journey and apart from the production and heritage of the mine, it
is a magnificent place.
The mines are known not only by the locals but also by
international tourists, bloggers and vloggers. Among the tourists, a large
number of them are students from various schools, colleges and universities who
enjoy visiting the site as well as seeing the mines in advance.
Salt wonders
While walking inside the mines, visitors come across a
mosque, a model of Minar-e-Pakistan, a dispensary, Chaghi Parvat and some other
colorful buildings like Marvel made of salt bricks. The luminous Sheesh-Mahal,
or palace of mirrors, is another attraction in the mines illuminated with
colorful bulbs with ponds made of transparent salt and water.
Cost
As ‘foreigners’ you have to paid $20 for each adult and $10
for each child. As a locals Pakistani pay 220 rupees per adult. There are also
many hotels for visitors with the average package for a night is about 5000 to
8000.
